UTM codes are used to assist with tracking the performance of content and social media campaigns. Apostle allows you to also automatically create an unique UTM code to links based on the user ID or business page ID of the person/page sharing the post. You can use these identifiers to track the performance of your content on an individual level.

For example, you are creating a post about an open vacancy. If you activate user/page ID tracking you can track how many website visitors (and even conversions) came from a specific user or business page share in Google Analytics (GA4).

Note: This article explains how to add the personalized Apostle UTM (utm_apostle) in the Apostle platform. For instructions on how to track and analyze this UTM in GA4, see How to track Apostle's personalized UTM (utm_apostle) in GA4.

How to enable user/page ID tracking

  1. Navigate to Create Post and paste your desired link into the text field.

  2. Click the Edit button next to the link to open the link customizer.

  3. Activate the Add user/page ID as UTM code slider.

  4. The snippet utm_apostle=1 will be automatically added to the link. This will dynamically insert the user ID or business page ID when the post is shared.

  5. (Optional) Add other UTM parameters such as utm_source or utm_medium as needed.

  6. Click Save to apply tracking.

⚠️ Important: Do not modify the utm_apostle=1 snippet. The actual user/page ID is added automatically when the content is shared.

How to identify user and page IDs

User IDs

  1. Go to Members in the left sidebar.

  2. Click the Download member list icon at the right side of the table.

  3. Open the Excel file and locate the Member ID column.

  4. Use the Member ID in Google Analytics to analyze performance per user.

Page IDs

  1. Go to Members in the left sidebar.

  2. Switch to the Business Pages view at the top of the screen.

  3. Click the Download page list icon on the right side of the table.

  4. Open the file and locate the Page slug column.

  5. Use the Page slug in Google Analytics to analyze performance by business page.

Note: This is an advanced feature for data analysis. We recommend only using this feature if you have sufficient knowledge of UTM codes and Google Analytics.

FAQs

What is the purpose of utm_apostle=1?

Can I edit the utm_apostle snippet?

No. Any manual changes will interfere with automatic ID insertion.

Do I need to add standard UTM parameters too?

Yes. You can and should include typical UTM parameters like utm_source and utm_medium for full tracking visibility.

Where can I analyze performance?

Use Google Analytics to filter traffic based on the dynamically inserted user or page IDs using the exported Member ID or Page slug data. For step-by-step instructions in GA4, see How to track Apostle's personalized UTM (utm_apostle) in GA4.
